New chart principles address AI-developed recordings

IFPI announces global principles governing the eligibility of recordings developed with generative AI for official music charts.

30 July 2026

IFPI has introduced principles for deciding when recordings made with generative AI can appear in official music charts. Announced on 30 July 2026, the framework is intended to preserve the charts’ emphasis on human artistry while allowing appropriate uses of AI in the creative process. It is not presented as a blanket ban on every recording that uses AI tools.

Human contribution and lawful tools

The central requirements concern authorisation, substantial human creation and the absence of manipulation concerns. The full framework also addresses compliance with applicable law, the terms of the AI service used and appropriate disclosure to listeners through downstream services. A recording’s popularity alone is therefore not the only consideration.

IFPI says the principles apply to charts it directly manages across several regions, while its national-group network will work on extending the approach to additional chart programmes. The announcement describes both direct application and a wider rollout; it should not be read as confirmation that every chart worldwide has adopted identical rules.

What changes for release planning

For artists and labels experimenting with generative tools, chart eligibility now involves questions about how a track was made as well as how it performs. Records of human contributions, the services used and the relevant permissions can help teams understand the requirements before delivery.

The framework also connects creative provenance with streaming integrity. A human-led recording using an authorised tool can still raise separate concerns if its listening figures are manipulated. These principles are chart-eligibility rules, not a substitute for copyright law or the terms of individual music services. Their practical application will depend on the chart programme handling a release.
