Music companies take legal action against Musi
Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment commence Canadian proceedings against the developers of the streaming app.
6 August 2026
Sony Music Group and Universal Music Group are commencing legal proceedings in Canada against the developers of Musi, according to an announcement from IFPI on 6 August 2026. The action, coordinated with Music Canada, concerns the app’s use of music sourced from YouTube. The allegations described by the industry organisations are claims in a legal dispute, not findings of liability reported in the announcement.
The dispute over authorisation
The claimants say Musi makes protected sound recordings available without permission and bypasses technical protections used by YouTube. IFPI also argues that the app earns money through its own advertising and subscriptions while relying on content made available through another platform.
IFPI says Apple removed Musi from the App Store in September 2024 following complaints from rights holders and YouTube. The organisation’s August announcement notes that people who had previously downloaded the app could still access the service. Removal from a store and the operation of an already installed app are therefore separate issues in its account.
A wider question for music services
The case draws attention to the difference between access to a recording and permission to build a separate commercial service around it. The industry’s position is that innovation should operate through licensing, with artists and rights holders paid when their recordings are used.
The announcement also calls for stronger action by app stores and affected platforms. It does not report a ruling on these new Canadian proceedings or set out a response from Musi’s developers. Readers should distinguish the companies’ allegations and policy requests from any eventual court decision. The legal outcome remains outside the scope of the source announcement.
