Music community introduces generative AI labels

A new track-level labelling programme aims to bring transparency about generative AI to fans and digital music services.

10 July 2026

A coalition of music organisations has proposed a shared way to tell listeners when generative AI is involved in a recording. Announced on 10 July 2026, the voluntary track-labelling approach is backed by IFPI, RIAA, A2IM, WIN, IMPALA, the Grammys, SAG-AFTRA and the Human Artistry Campaign. It centres on a distinction between AI-generated and AI-assisted sound recordings.

Two labels, different creative roles

Under the proposed guidelines, AI-generated describes a recording where generative AI supplies all or the primary portion of its creative elements. Examples include an AI-generated lead vocal, a key instrumental performance generated by AI or music created entirely from prompts.

AI-assisted describes a recording created substantially by humans, with generative AI contributing some expressive elements. In that category, humans perform the lead vocal and primary instruments. The distinction is intended to convey the role of the technology rather than treating every use as equivalent.

A framework still to be implemented

The announcement describes visual icons supported by metadata and delivery systems. The organisations plan to work with music services, distributors, aggregators and standards bodies on implementation. It does not establish that the labels were already available consistently across every listening platform at the time of the announcement.

The scope is also specific: the initial system concerns generative AI in sound recordings, not its use in lyrics, composition, videos or cover artwork. For release teams, that makes accurate creative documentation valuable. A label can communicate how a recording was produced, but it does not by itself establish that every underlying right has been cleared or that a track qualifies for a particular chart.
